Oh, and Rick Astley….but he doesn’t really count does he? Chart date Throw in a novelty song (“Star Trekkin”), some 70s types having a renaissance (Bee Gees) and hits for some already very established stars (George Michael/Aretha Franklin, Madonna, Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson) – where was the new music? Well, that was down to Pet Shop Boys, T’Pau and err…Mel & Kim to hold up that particular banner. Six of them were old songs either just re-released (Reet Petite” and “Stand By Me”) or covers (“Everything I Own”, “Let It Be”, “La Bamba” and “Always On My Mind”). Looking at some of the other No 1 records of the year though, it’s a mixed collection at best and I don’t think I bought any of them. There were some ground breaking records in there though including two No 1s (“Jack Your Body” and “Pump Up The Volume”) that would help pave the way for the dance generation boom that was just around the corner. And there goes 1987….as with 1986, it wasn’t as good as I remembered.
